A 'good' APY is one that's competitive with the best nationally available rates, beats inflation, and comes with no balance games. Don't compare your rate to your neighbor's — compare it to the top of the market, which you can check in 30 seconds on any rate aggregator.

The three tests

  1. The market test: look up today's top rates on an aggregator (Bankrate, NerdWallet, or similar). A good APY sits within spitting distance of the top 10 nationally — not 50 spots down.
  2. The inflation test: if inflation is running hotter than your APY, your savings are shrinking in real terms. At minimum, your rate should clear inflation.
  3. The fine-print test: some banks advertise a great APY that only applies above a high balance, or for 90 days, or with 12 debit transactions a month. A good APY is the rate on your balance with your behavior.

Why your bank probably fails the test

Traditional brick-and-mortar banks pay a fraction of what online banks pay — often 10 to 20 times less — because they can. Most customers never move their savings, so there's no pressure to compete.

The fix takes an afternoon: open a high-yield account at a competitive online bank, link it to your checking, and set an automatic monthly transfer. Your checking stays where it is; your savings actually earn.

Tip: APY-chasing has diminishing returns: moving from 0.5% to 4.5% transforms your savings; moving from 4.5% to 4.7% on $10,000 earns you $20 a year. Switch once to something competitive, then stop watching.

What 'good' is NOT

  • Not the highest number you can find — teaser rates that drop after 3 months aren't good, they're bait.
  • Not worth locking up emergency money — a slightly lower APY you can access instantly beats a higher one with withdrawal penalties for money you might need.
  • Not a substitute for investing — even a great APY is a parking spot, not a growth engine, for long-term money.

Quick answers

What is considered a good APY right now?

One that's near the top of nationally available rates on an aggregator, beats inflation, and applies to your actual balance without hoops. The number moves with the rate environment — check current top rates rather than trusting a fixed figure.

Are online banks safe for high-yield savings?

If FDIC-insured (or NCUA for credit unions), yes — same $250,000 protection per depositor as any traditional bank. Verify the insurance before depositing.

Should I switch banks for 0.2% more APY?

Probably not worth the hassle on modest balances. Switch once from a terrible rate to a competitive one — that's the move that matters.
