Frequently asked questions

How is the eBay final value fee calculated?
eBay takes a percentage of the total amount of the sale — that's the item price plus any shipping you charge the buyer, handling charges, and even the sales tax eBay collects. For most categories the rate is 13.6% on the first $7,500 per item, dropping to 2.35% above that, plus a $0.30–$0.40 per-order fee.
Why does eBay charge fees on shipping and sales tax?
History: when shipping was exempt, sellers listed $1 items with $30 postage to dodge fees. eBay closed that door and it stayed shut. You never receive the sales tax — eBay collects and remits it — but the fee still applies to it. Price accordingly.
Do I pay anything just to list an item?
Your first 250 listings each month are free. After that it's $0.35 per listing, whether or not the item sells. Good 'Til Cancelled listings renew every 30 days and each renewal counts against the free allowance.
My category isn't listed — what rate do I use?
Pick "Custom rate" and enter the exact percentage from your Seller Hub. Jewelry, handbags, motors parts and a few other categories have their own tiered schedules — always check the category eBay actually assigned to your listing, since two sellers with the same product can pay different rates.
How can I lower my eBay fees?
Double-check your category assignment, consider a Store subscription (Basic and above drop most categories to about 12.7%), earn Top Rated Plus status for a 10% discount on the final value fee, and only pay for Promoted Listings where the extra visibility actually converts.
