Venmo fees — quick answers
Is receiving money on Venmo free?
For personal payments from friends — yes, completely free. The fees kick in when money changes hands for business: 1.9% + $0.10 on a business profile, or 2.99% on personal-account payments tagged as Goods & Services.
What is the Venmo Goods & Services fee?
2.99% of the payment, paid by the seller, with no fixed fee. It applies when a buyer pays a personal Venmo account and marks the payment as Goods & Services, which also gives the buyer Purchase Protection. On $50 you pay $1.50 and keep $48.50. Selling through PayPal instead? See the PayPal Goods & Services fee calculator.
Business profile or Goods & Services — which is cheaper?
The business profile (1.9% + $0.10) beats Goods & Services (2.99%) on every amount. On a $100 sale that's $2.00 vs $2.99. If you sell regularly, the business profile pays for itself instantly — it's free to set up.
How do I avoid the instant transfer fee?
Use the standard transfer (1–3 business days) — it's free. The 1.75% instant fee only buys you speed. Unless you need the money today, patience saves you $1.75 per $100.
Does Venmo charge the sender or the receiver?
Depends: credit-card funding fees (3%) are paid by the sender. Business and Goods & Services fees come out of the receiver's amount. Instant transfer fees are paid by whoever cashes out.
Can I use Venmo for international payments?
No — Venmo accounts are US-only. For international transfers, look at PayPal or a dedicated transfer service instead.
